  盛夏的蓉城,阳光纯净,一如记者眼前的采访对象——美国赛伦牧州立大学终身教授汤在勇,条纹T恤,黑色布裤,休闲、明快、清爽。

  1957年10月出生在重庆万州,1977年文革后恢复高考第一年考上重庆大学,研读机械工程,获学士学位;1984年,考入成都科技大学金属材料系,获硕士学位;1992年,就读美国佛罗里达大学决策信息科学系,获博士学位……

  循迹汤在勇求学之路,从铸造、材料、信息科学、管理——活脱脱一个“理工男”的典型形象。

  “冰心偶一暖,热血为谁寒”,“因怜故人远,不叫野径荒”……

  若不是得到汤在勇教授亲口证实,实难将这些意境优美诗句的作者与其经济学者的身份画上等号。

  母亲是万州重点中学老师,出身书香的汤在勇自幼喜欢读书,尤其偏爱唐诗宋词,平时讲学闲暇之余,最爱的就是舞文弄墨,感怀下笔。与多数“理工男”相比,汤在勇显然有着更丰富也更敏锐的情绪。

  左边科学,右边诗歌——“理工男”与浪漫诗人,现代与古典,就这样在汤在勇身上融洽地交汇,没有丝毫违和感。

  我们采访的话题就从“理工男”的浪漫情怀开始聊起。

  

  从小就爱捣鼓

  

  古人说,“三岁看小,七岁看老”。汤在勇的浪漫DNA或许在小时候的爱捣鼓、喜欢创新中就已开始显山露水。

  儿时的汤在勇喜欢仿生学、飞行器,对新生事物兴趣浓厚,从小就爱捣鼓点什么。

  上 世纪70年代初,姐弟仨一人养了一只小母鸡,希望下了蛋能改善改善生活。可养了3个月,小母鸡还没下蛋,汤在勇有些心急了,就开始琢磨“大人有时生小孩不 顺利就会打催产针,小鸡下不了蛋是不是也该打一针呢?”于是,汤在勇就给小母鸡打了一针催产针,没两天,小母鸡果真生了——生下一只软壳蛋。

  喜 欢捣鼓的事不只一例。汤在勇的太太向明秋给我们讲了他小时候另一件糗事。汤在勇从小就喜欢小动物,有一天突发奇想,想养个老鼠当宠物。他在院子里挖了一个 洞,面上盖上一块玻璃,然后将抓来的小老鼠放在洞里,美滋滋地想,“小老鼠的一举一动都在我掌控里了,天天都可以观察到”。结果有一天去看,汤在勇傻了 眼,洞里小老鼠没了踪影,旁边有一个小洞——老鼠居然会打洞,溜了。

  

  学霸之路

  

  人生就是一个追求梦想的过程。在不同的阶段,可能会有不同的梦想,但追求贯穿始终。

  翻看汤在勇的学历,1982年,重庆大学机械工程学士;1984年,成都科技大学金属材料硕士;从学士到硕士,汤在勇只用了不到两年的时间。用现在时髦的话说,简直就是犀利“学霸”一枚。

  “我 喜欢读书,也很珍惜来之不易的学习机会。”作为高考恢复第一年就圆了大学梦的幸运儿,汤在勇在校的时间几乎都花在了学习上。“三点一线”是他大学生活的轨 迹,还常常因为熬夜读书错过了宿舍关门时间,翻墙便成了家常便饭。回忆当年翻墙那一幕,汤在勇笑称自己当年“是冒生命之险在读书”。

  上世纪90年代初,机遇再次垂青汤在勇,有一个出国的名额给了他,专业是交通管理。

  去还是不去?

  从所学专业来讲,喜欢文学的汤在勇并不喜欢交通管理,但出国可以看看外面的世界是什么样,这对喜欢新生事物的汤在勇来说,选择就没有那么纠结了,“出国留学最初的想法很简单,就是想开开眼界。”

  学 霸不仅学习能力强,适应能力也超强。到美国没几个月,汤在勇便适应了美国生活。适应了生活,便学会融入,在融入了解中,汤在勇发现计算机很有潜力,便转系 学习决策信息科学,而当时在国内,计算机都是稀罕物,决策科学更是少闻。“这是一个方向,学成之后今后在国内一定会排上用场”。善于学习的汤在勇在转学决 策科学后,很快在系里脱颖而出,同年就升为助理教授。而后决策科学在国内蓬勃兴起,也充分证明了汤在勇当时的眼光极具前瞻性。

  

  “百年不改少年心”

  

  “黄花到白头,犹发少年狂”,这是汤在勇描绘蒲公英的诗句。

  在太太向明秋心里,汤在勇就是“百年不改少年心,永远拥有一颗童心”的人。

  “外表沉稳,内心火热,充满激情,崇尚‘实干’。”这是向明秋对丈夫的评价。

  在赛伦牧州立大学,凡是认识汤在勇的人,不是叫他汤教授,而是叫“汤哥”,不仅老师这样叫,学生们也都这样叫。“他对人永远都是乐呵呵的样子,一点架子也没有”。

  虽然已在美国生活了28年,但汤在勇却依然拥有一副“中国胃”,每年的圣诞节,入乡随俗,家里都会装扮一棵圣诞树,但大餐的准备却是包饺子、汤圆。

  汤在勇现在是赛伦牧州立大学决策科学系的系主任,就这一外人梦寐以求的职位,在汤在勇那里却成为一“负担”——不喜欢做行政,只喜欢研究学术。就这一怪脾气,却颇受学校领导欣赏,称其为“沉静的领导”,还非要其当不可。

  当上了系主任,崇尚实干的他免了不必要的会议,有事直接找联系人,或者通过邮件联系,“不求形式,只要结果”。

  汤在勇平时除了教学,还喜欢旅游,特别喜欢自驾游。他喜欢驾驶时那种自由驰骋、无拘无束的感觉。以至于周末几家人出游,说好轮流开车,最后的情况是他一个人将车开到目的地。

  说 起开车,汤在勇对第一次开车上高速记忆深刻,那是他到美国几年后的事。他在美国的朋友有一辆越野车要扔掉,但在美国,处理旧车是一件比较麻烦的事,汤在勇 那时正好在学开车,于是便要了那车以练手。接车那天,距他开始学车仅有几个月。从西海岸开到东海岸,横穿整个美国,足足开了一个礼拜。现在回忆起那段经历 感受,汤在勇直呼“过瘾啊”。

  

  游子乡愁

  

  乡愁是心中珍藏的酒,离乡越久,味道越醇厚;

  乡愁是无以回报的忐忑,是坚定不移的归心和眷恋。

  ……

  这是汤在勇常常吟诵的诗句。

  “报效祖国”更是汤在勇时刻萦绕在心的一个情结。

  浓浓的思乡情后面,母亲带给汤在勇的影响很大。

  在 汤在勇印象中,母亲勤勤恳恳、任劳任怨、传知育人、低调做人,树立了一个真正的蜡烛形象。“母亲无微不至地照料我们的生活,同时也努力培养我们的道德情 操。她身体力行,言传身教,让我们从小就懂得了勤俭节约、诚实守信、嫉恶如仇、知恩图报,懂得了做人的道理。特别是我,长期居留海外,难尽孝道,她不但毫 无怨言,反而以自古忠孝不能两全来开导我们,教育我们安心学习工作,不忘祖国和人民,争取对国家作出贡献。正是她的教育和影响,我多年来坚持经常回国讲 学,做学术报告,把国外的最新信息和成果带回国内,帮助祖国发展和强盛。”

  近年来,随着中国开放力度进一步加大,许多国外先进的科技和理念引进了国内,决策科学在国内掀起了热潮。但国内水平与国外先进水平相比,差距在30-40年以上,这让汤在勇看到了报效祖国的希望。

  什么是决策科学?

  对 于个人,理同“男怕入错行,女怕嫁错郎”;对于企业,决策失误则有可能“一失足造成千古恨”,带来灭顶之灾。由此而言,拥有科学决策能力不仅事关个人前 途,更是企业的生存之本、制胜之道、力量之源。“决策科学范围很广,大到国家战略制定,小到个人选择取舍,不同的选择,结果不一,需要科学性、方法论,国 内重点大学一般都设置了,是一热点”。汤在勇说,作为时下“高端大气上档次”的时髦词汇,“大数据”在不同领域总是被不断提及,其背后,展示的就是决策科 学。

  具体怎么讲?

  作为终身教授,汤在勇解释说,数据挖掘是分析数据,并从中寻找趋势、规律或者结果。“数据挖掘可以 用来预测未来、发现过去的规律,可以把数据按照你的需要归纳成不同的组,可以展示活动和事件的先后顺序。大数据带来的变革,是从因果关系进化到并联关系分 析。”汤在勇举例说,假如女儿怀孕了,而父亲在不知情的情况下,可通过女儿近期购物情况的数据便可分析得出。

  对于中国决策科学这项学科而言,有着近30年海外求学、从教经历,又常回国的汤在勇既身在其中,又是“局外人”,用这种视角关注打量中国的发展,更能客观、清晰看到中西的差异和碰撞,这愈发促使汤在勇萌生了“智力回流、报效祖国”,回国讲学的念头。

  “落叶归根是每一个海外游子心中的梦。无论走多远,游子的‘根’永远在中国,永远不会忘记所生所长的这块土地。”

Fluker, and S. Sivaramakrishnan. July 1997-December 1998. Designed a Web-based system using Active Server Pages (ASP) server-side scripting to implement the container loading algorithm. Dealing with a wide variety of ammunitions, the system minimizes the number of containers needed while meeting size, weight, and compatibility requirements.

  1996 Microsoft Inc. Innovators in Higher Education award ($5000) for incorporating Internet applications in teaching. One of five awarded in the nation in 1996.
